When you purchased your home chances are the inspector or realtor failed to mention what type of maintenance your home would need. Asphalt and other shingle roofing is constantly in a state of flux as it expands during the heat of the day and contracts at night when it cools down. It can also contract and expand during rainstorms, snowfall or dry aired times of the year. This puts a lot of stress on your roofing and in most cases it can handle it but it should still be inspected each year to ensure that it won't leak!

If your house is near trees, the debris from those trees will settle on your roof and decay allowing algae and mold a place to grow. When a roof is covered in algae and mold it can't dry out properly and it also can't reflect the sun's rays causing it to heat up more than usual. This can drastically raise your utility costs and in some cases dramatically shorten the life or your roof.
Pollution, floating pollens, airborne spores and residual debris are also a great food source for moss. They allow the growth of mold which makes a perfect breading ground for moss to grow. Northern facing roof surfaces usually get the least amount of the sun and will take longer for moisture or dew to evaporate or run off. Believe it or not but the steeper the roof pitch, the more moss will grow! Moss can also create an additional problem because its roots will cause the composition to pit and crack. Eventually this will cause your roof to leak which will cause damage inside of your home until it's repaired or replaced.
